NEW DELHI: Before his lover left him for another man, she had told him about her fascination for Hyundai Creta. This 65-year-old thief then decided to start stealing this car to woo other women. He would follow the cars along with his accomplices, identify their location and steal them later.
The elderly auto thief, Raj Bhatia, is unmarried and had been jailed earlier for stealing cars in Delhi and other states. Bhatia had been living in a rented house in Palam Vihar since the past nine years. He is also wanted in a MCOCA case.The police started investigations after receiving a complaint about the theft of a Creta. “We came to know that Bhatia and his accomplices used to keep the stolen vehicles at a park in Palam Vihar. A team of four policemen led by SHO Kirti Nagar Anil Sharma was then posted outside the park round the clock,” said DCP (west) Vijay Kumar.
He would use the stolen cars to woo women for a few days and then sell it for a meagre Rs 1-1.5 lakh in Siliguri, West Bengal. Two stolen Creta cars, two cloned remote keys and two false numberplates have been seized from Bhatia.
