Kerala to organise transgender athletics meet on April 28

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The logo for the nation’s first ever transgender athletics meet was released by veteran athlete Mercy Kuttan here on Wednesday. The one-day athletic meet which will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at 8:30 am at the Central Stadium here on April 28 will witness around 200 participants from across the state.”We have more than 20 participants from each district except from Wayanad, Idukki and Alappuzha from where only less than 10 participants have registered for the sports meet,” said Anil Arjunan, event co-ordinator.Coaching for various sports items will be given to participants from April 25 onwards at the Central Stadium. “We are trying to give a warm up session for the participants in order to avoid any kind of physical injuries and muscle cramps during the event. Since none of them are professionally trained athletes, there are chances for injuries and they will be trained in stretching, jogging and striding to avoid the same,” said Jagadeesh P, who is the coach for the participants from Thiruvananthapuram.  “I had been selected in the state team for 400m relay at the age of 15. In the years that followed, I had to take a back seat from such sports events due to persistent social stigma. After these many years I am so excited to participate in a sports meet. This time, I am going to try my luck in short put,” said Sreekutty, a participant.

Each team will comprise of 19 participants and a team manager. The athletic meet will also include a march-past by the participants inside the Central Stadium at 8am on the day of inauguration. The athletic meet will include six items including sprint in 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay, short put and long jump.
