press club of india, Indian Tehalka News

The Left Front plans to launch a State-wide agitation against the power tariff hike by the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) and the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL).

“Both the CESC and the WBSEDCL have made steep hikes in power tariff. The Kolkata district Left Front will hold demonstration in front of Victoria House (CESC’s office in Central Kolkata) on September 9 and 10,” Left Front chairperson Biman Basu said on Friday.

CESC authorities refused to comment on the matter. Accusing the CESC of hiking tariff at an “exorbitant rate” Mr. Basu said that from April 2011 to April 2015 CESC has hiked tariff by 61 per cent per 100 units.

“Whereas in April 2011 power tariff was Rs.420.85 per 100 units, in April 2015 it has gone up to Rs.675.65 per 100 units,” he said.
