Maharashtra minister apologises for anti-women remark

MUMBAI: Alarmed by stringent criticism in the media as well as protests lodged by women’s organisations across Maharashtra, senior BJP member and water resources minister Girish Mahajan on Monday tendered unconditional apology for his remarks over naming liquor products after women for boosting sales.

“There was absolutely no intension to insult the women community. I am withdrawing my remarks. I am tendering unconditional apology. At the same time, I feel that certain brands of liquor are named after women’s name, should be reconsidered,” Mahajan said. Addressing a meeting of farmers in tribal Nandurbar district on Sunday, Mahajan had stated that for boosting the sales of liquor products, they should be named after names of women.
“I am told the name of the liquor is Maharaja, if it is renamed as Maharani, certainly the sales will go up. The names of most of the brands of the liquors are named after women, mainly to boost sales,” Mahajan said.

“If you want the demand for alcohol or any other product to rise, name it after a woman and see how the demand soars,” he had said on Saturday while attending an event of a sugar factory which also produces liquor under the brand name ‘Maharaja’ Mahajan’s remarks resulted in a state wide protests. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik condemned his statement, saying, it was an insult of the entire community. In Chandrapur, women activists lodged a complaint to the local police station.
