CHENNAI: Police on Sunday lathi-charged a group of residents demanding action against policemen for the death of 19-year-old Selvam in a motorcycle accident in K.K.Nagar here on Saturday.
The residents also removed the median that had sharp railings which pierced V.Selvam, causing his death.
On Sunday, T.Jayashree, 23rd Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet, arrived at the scene of accident to conduct an enquiry. She listened to 13 people, including Selvam’s mother Lakshmi and G.Raja and D. Vignesh, who were riding pillion and others eyewitnesses, and recorded their statements.
“Summons will be sent to the other witnesses and then we will take their version too,” she told The Hindu.
The Judge also visited the mortuary of Government Royapettah Hospital. The post-mortem was completed in the evening,” a city police officer said.
Soon after the hour-long enquiry, K.K.Nagar residents, including relatives of Selvam, assembled on Arcot Road around 1.30 p.m. “We want action to be taken against the policemen who caused the death of my nephew. They [policemen] did not even bother to rush Selvam to hospital,” said Mukundan, the victim’s uncle.
After this, the group walked back to the 80-Feet Road and removed the sharp median from its concrete base.
“The median was also a reason for my nephew’s death. There is absolutely no need for sharp spikes on the median. It should be replaced with safer conical medians,” added Mr. Mukundan.
Situation returned to normal only after 3 p.m. after the agitated crowd dispersed.
