Kiran Bedi seeks more investments, plans to get Smart City project for Puducherry
On day one, after assuming charge as Lieutenant Governor (LG), former police officer Kiran Bedi wanted the Union Territory of Puducherry to compete with Goa in tourism sector and to make the UT more prosperous.
On Monday, Ms. Bedi was given a ceremonial guard of honour by the Puducherry Police in front of Raj Nivas, the official residence. She inspected the guard of honour along with Inspector General of Police Praveer Ranjan.
Addressing reporters, she said her message to the public and officials was that she wanted to make Puducherry prosperous in all respects. Now the directors will lead their own departments while secretaries will mentor. We will move very fast. We can make Puducherry a better tourist destination than Goa. We want more investments here. I have no doubt that the Government of India as soon as possible will provide better and faster rail and last mile connectivity whatever we need,” said Ms. Bedi.
Pointing to Chief Secretary Manoj Parida, the LG said he would ensure single window clearance. “Anybody wanting to do businesses will get immediate single window clearance which will be the fastest in India. We will ensure total integrity in our service.”
Expressing her wish that Puducherry should remain clean, she praised it as the cleanest city and purest in a way.
It has a spiritual and clean environment and is such an asset for India. We need to put the asset on the international map and need non-resident Indians to return and enjoy Puducherry.”
Asked whether she has been more idealistic than practical in her approach, Ms. Bedi remarked, “Unless you have high aspiration and you demand yourself of high, how will you achieve high? Aim high is to go high. That is what I have learnt. The 25,000 employees here are one of the best.”
Adding that Sunday’s meeting had put all of us in one synergy, she asked the Chief Secretary Mr. Parida, who was standing near her to tell what he said at the meeting.
Mr. Parida said, “I said we are going to run the vehicle in fifth gear, i.e. top gear.” She immediately appreciated him for his statement.
Ms. Bedi continued, “We will get Smart city. Puducherry has to be included as Smart City in the next rounds. We have got to earn it and deserve it.”
Referring to revival of closed industries such as Anglo French Textiles, she said, “We will address one thing at a time.”
Asked whether she was given any special assignment by the BJP-led Union Government, Ms. Bedi said, “Prosperous Puducherry,” that is what President of India said, because, now I am reporting to the President.”
