There is a need to correct public perception about the way Parliament and legislatures are functioning. People are depressed and wondering what has happened to the legislators and political parties need to ponder over, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M. Venkaiah Naidu said here on Tuesday.
Addressing Legislative Affairs Ministers, Whips and Chief Whips of various parties at the inaugural session of the two-day 17th all-India Whips conference, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said credibility of Parliament and legislatures depend on their members and the quality of discussions and members need to question themselves. “We are political rivals and not enemies but scenes in the legislatures are disturbing people”, he saidMr. Vekaiah Naidu and earlier Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who inaugurated the conference, Chairman of AP Legislative Council A. Chakrapani and Speaker of AP Assembly Kodela Siva Prasada Rao felt the need for a proper cooperation between the members to ensure smooth functioning of the Houses. Role of Chief Whips and Whips of the parties is crucial in this aspect, they said.
While discussing pays and perks for MPs, Mr Venkaiah Naidu mentioned the editorial in The Hinduand read out a few lines from it. Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said Assembly was not functioning properly due to lack of coordination. MP K. Haribabu welcomed and Union Secretary (Parliamentary Affairs) Abdul Amanaullah, Secretary to AP Legislative Assembly Satyanarayana spoke.
